Petrobras has started the production in its Chinook field on Thursday, the operator announced. The field, located in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, overcame the incidents occurred in June, when 5,400 liters oil were spilled during the development tests.

The 4th well will drill at 8,000 meters deep in Lower Tertiary reservoirs. BW Pioneer FPSO, located at 250 km offshore Louisiana in 2,500 meters of water, is taking part in the extraction. BW Pioneer has capacity for 80,000 barrels crude and 500,000 cubic meters gas.

According to the press release, this is the first time a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is being used in the Mexico Gulf.

The Chinook field is 66.67% owned and operated by Petrobras America Inc. and 33.33% owned by Total E&P USA, Inc.

A silicon purification plant in Brazil might be announced before the year 2012 is over, according to the chief of the renewable energy department at BNDES, Antonio Tovar.

Silicon is an essential element for the photovoltaic panel production process.

Such production has interested many businessmen, who have started to create projects located in Brazil during the last two years. Those projects mainly aim to mass-produce photovoltaic panels in this country. As a consequence, the negotiations with many potential silicon providers have started.

This process has been influenced by Annel, the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency, which expects consumers to install their own power production system for self-consumption.

“I believe we need to prepare for privatization of land sites” declared Russian Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev.

The Russian Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, supports Kyrgyztan’s intention of joining the Customs Union formed by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

 “We have filed an application to join the Customs Union and a group of experts is currently at work. The path has been chosen and it is only a matter of time” said Omurbek Babanov, Kyrgyz President. This will is shared by Mevdedev: “Russia’s invariable position is that Kyrgyzstan should become a member of the Customs Union”.

This first step has to be followed by an integration process and the signing of several treaties due to Kyrgyzstan’s access to Customer Union.

YPF and PDVSA will join forces

Argentina’s President Cristina Kirchner and Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez signed a document to establish a strategic alliance between the Argentinian oil company YPF and Venezuelan PDVSA.

As the document states, the main objective of this agreement is “joint planning the hydrocarbon value chain in Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Republic of Argentina.”

Furthermore, it is intended to create “associations for the estate companies from both countries to optimize current projects and future projects development.”

The alliance sets “PDVSA to join oil and shale gas exploration projects in Argentina and PDVSA and YPF to take part in the in the mixed company to established in the area Ayacucho 6 of the Oniroco Oil Belt. Likewise, PDVSA will join “Transitory Business Union (UTE)”.
